Over 80 percent of Manistee County residents report inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables. Our Plant A Row campaign mobilizes backyard gardeners as well as large scale farmers who commit to planting an extra row of produce to share with hungry Manistee County families.
Participation is easy. Fill out a commitment form, pick up a yard sign, then shop seed catalogues, your local farm store or hardware store, and local greenhouses and select the fruit and vegetable seeds and plants you’d like to grow in your garden.
When your produce is ready to harvest, donate surplus produce at one of the designated drop off sites throughout Manistee County. Your harvest will be shared with food-insecure families that will greatly benefit from the fruits (and vegetables) of your labor.
No space to garden at home? No problem! Raised beds are available at the Sophia Street Community Garden. By renting one today, you can grow healthy food for your family, and donate any extra to the Kitchen. Download the 2011 garden plot application here.
